Classes and Workshops

A key part of our club’s identity is teaching people how to do bonsai. In the past our club offered a series of classes for new members, starting in January. Now we operate a year round series of Beginning and Intermediate Workshops.

In the Beginning Workshop new members bring in and work on their own trees in a small group under the guidance of a knowledgeable bonsai teacher. You will get hands-on experience with enough guidance to help you learn key skills – such as how to style, prune, wire and repot trees. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary to participate, just a commitment to advancing your skills in bonsai. If you don’t have a tree yet or are simply curious, you may visit as an observer to see if it is what you are interested in. This workshop is taught by Richard and Barbara Phillips and Rita Curbow. New members will receive an invitation to participate.

Once you have mastered a few skills you are welcome to join our Intermediate Workshop. This workshop has more participants than the Beginning Workshop so you need to be more self-sufficient. A knowledgeable teacher and senior club members are on hand to discuss how you might improve your tree. Members of the Beginning Workshop are invited to attend Intermediate Workshop as observers – to see what other members are doing, but not as participants.

Use the Contact Us page if you’d like to know more info.

Note: To attend workshops you must be a member of Kusamura Bonsai Club.
