Story of the Tree

I bought this Acer palmatum at the Kusamura Show in 2025. It had belonged to Lynne O'Dell, who had inherited it from long-time Kusamura member John Planting. I took it to one of Steve Iwaki's monthly bonsai workshops in 2025, and some restyling was done to reduce the tree canopy and give it a freer, more windswept character. Early in 2026, before its leaves unfurled, at Steve's suggestion, we repotted the tree in a handmade, frost-resistant, composite "bowl" by Henka, a Belgium-based artist. In this natural-looking setting, I hope John and Lynne's tree will feel at home.
