American Sweetgum – A Forest from Home
Botanical Name: Liquidambar styraciflua
Common Name: American Sweetgum
Story of the Tree
This forest planting of American Sweetgum was created just this spring, but its roots stretch back five years.
The trees began as seedlings growing in Ray’s own yard, where they were dug up and set aside with the vision of turning them into a future bonsai composition.
Now united in a single planting, these trees tell a quiet, personal story—one of homegrown material, long-term thinking, and the joy of seeing a forest emerge from familiar ground.
Still in development, the planting invites us to imagine what it will become as the trunks thicken, the canopy fills in, and the seasonal color of sweetgum begins to shine.
