California Juniper – A Tree Through Many Hands
Botanical Name: Juniperus californica
Common Name: California Juniper
Story of the Tree
This California Juniper, estimated to be 150–200 years old, has been shaped and guided by many hands throughout its long life.
It was originally collected by Lonnie McCormick during a trip with the legendary Harry Hirao. From there, Mark O’Brien cared for the tree for three years, continuing its development until Kathy Shaner worked on it at a Kusamura Club meeting in July 2017—the very day Steve and Lynne won it in the club raffle.
Since then, its journey has continued in trusted hands. Lynne has worked with Kathy Shaner on two more occasions, and the tree has also been refined and studied with Ryan Nicholls, Steve Iwaki, and most recently, Yannick Keegan.
It is now planted in a Yamaki pot, chosen for its curving form, which complements the tree’s unique balance of delicate foliage and powerful trunk movement.
“We feel honored to be caretakers of such a noble native tree.”
The tree stands today not only as a representation of California’s landscape, but as a living tribute to the artists, mentors, and stewards who have shaped it over time.
