Chinese Hackberry – A First Deciduous Step
Botanical Name: Celtis sinensis
Common Name: Chinese Hackberry (エノキ)
Story of the Tree
This Chinese Hackberry was purchased at the REBS 2023 Show in Rohnert Park. At the time, the tree showed signs of neglect, and its future was uncertain. But it held potential—and for David, it became something more: his first deciduous bonsai.
In the early stages, the goal was simple: just keep it alive. And in that simplicity began a journey of observation, learning, and quiet commitment.
With guidance and encouragement from members of the Kusamura Bonsai Club, David began to take his next steps. In Summer 2024, he carefully started opening up space between branches, allowing light and air into the canopy—marking the beginning of its true refinement.
Now in active development, this tree represents a turning point—a humble and honest start toward something lasting.
