Common in Nature
Botanical Name: Pinus thunbergii
Common Name: Black Pine
Story of the Tree
In 2019, Kathy Shaner used this tree — owned for many years by club member Alex Lofton — as the subject of a demonstration restyle. She transformed the dead top into a long jin and carved a shari extending several inches down the trunk.
Her point was as much educational as aesthetic: jin and shari may be uncommon on black pine bonsai, but they are entirely natural in the wild. She wanted to show us exactly how to create them properly. Club member Jerry Carpenter assisted.
