From Taraval Street
Botanical Name: Chamaecyparis obtusa
Common Name: Hinoki Cypress
Story of the Tree
This hinoki has a story within a story. Its original owner, Terence Krista, first encountered bonsai in the early 1990s while living in San Francisco. He found this tree at a small nursery on the western end of Taraval Street — no more than six or seven inches tall. "It loves to be in full sun," Terence recalls, a quality it has carried through the decades.
I won the auction bid for this tree at Mammoth in February 2025. That June, Jennifer Price gave it its first styling under my ownership. It rests on a stand made by Jerry Braswell.
From a small nursery on Taraval to this display — a long way from six inches.
