Globe Juniper – A Raft from the Past
Botanical Name: Juniperus chinensis
Common Name: Globe Juniper (tentative)
Story of the Tree
This raft-style juniper has deep roots in Kusamura Bonsai Club history. It was originally created in 1976 by the legendary John Naka during a club demonstration—a living remnant of one of bonsai’s most iconic teachers.
The pot it’s planted in came from Montebello Nursery, and for an incredible 40 years, it was cared for by Sandy Planting. In 2016, she entrusted the tree to Michael, asking him to care for it on behalf of the club.
Although its exact variety isn’t confirmed, Michael believes it to be a Globe Juniper, and since taking over, he’s restored the tree to health and continues its care and refinement.
This tree is more than a specimen—it’s a symbol of continuity, community, and quiet legacy.
