Japanese White Pine – Strength in the Roots

Botanical Name: Pinus parviflora

Common Name: Japanese White Pine

Story of the Tree

This Japanese White Pine was acquired in 1990 from Ken in Palo Alto. At the time, the tree was already estimated to be around 25 years old—making it approximately 60 years old today.

It is grafted onto Japanese Black Pine rootstock, a common and time-honored technique that pairs the refined foliage and graceful structure of white pine with the strength and resilience of black pine roots.

Over decades, the tree has matured into a classic example of Japanese bonsai tradition—quiet, weathered, and enduring. It stands not just as a composition of trunk and branch, but as a living connection to its layered past.
