Special Edition Boxwood – A Gift for Growth

Botanical Name: Buxus microphylla 'compacta'

Common Name: Kingsville Boxwood

Tree Name: Special Edition Boxwood

Story of the Tree

The Kingsville Boxwood is one of three dwarf boxwood cultivars discovered on a standard Japanese boxwood at Kingsville Nurseries in Maryland in 1912. While the standard variety can put on 3–6 inches of growth per year, dwarf cultivars like this one grow at just a fraction of that pace—often less than half an inch annually.

This particular tree made its way into Jenn’s care during a club potting party in 2023, where she was offered "first dibs" as a thank-you for stepping up as the newsletter editor.

Since then, not much about the tree has changed—boxwoods are slow, after all—but Jenn’s appreciation for both the tree and the newsletter role continues to grow.

This tree may take its time, but like all good bonsai... so do the best stories.
