The Scar Is Still There
Botanical Name: Ulmus parvifolia
Common Name: Chinese Elm
Story of the Tree
This tree was a retirement gift from a long-time client twenty-two years ago. It is a seedling from a tree I cared for over twenty-three years — so in a sense, I knew this tree before it was mine.
When I received it, it was in a five-gallon pot, ten feet high and four feet wide. Getting the root system shallow enough for bonsai took years of patient work.
On May 9, 2020, I removed a very large limb. The scar is still there. To fill in the canopy, branches #2, #4, and #5 were added through thread grafting.
