The Wave – Carved by Time and Hands
Botanical Name: Juniperus scopulorum
Common Name: Rocky Mountain Juniper
Tree Name: The Wave
Story of the Tree
This Rocky Mountain Juniper, affectionately named The Wave, began its bonsai journey in 2008, when Rita purchased it as raw stock at the Mammoth Bazaar.
Some years into its development, she discovered that borers had hollowed out part of the trunk—a potential loss, but also an unexpected opportunity. With the help of fellow artists Idris Anderson and Steve Iwaki, she carved into the damaged wood, turning decay into a dramatic, intentional feature.
The result is a tree that feels like it’s been shaped by wind, weather, and time, echoing the movement of the wave it’s named after.
Now paired with a scroll and accent plant, The Wave flows with presence and story—rooted in patience, resilience, and shared craftsmanship.
