Winter Gem Holly – A First Spark
Botanical Name: Ilex crenata compacta 'Winter Gem'
Common Name: Japanese Holly
Story of the Tree
This little holly, affectionately known as Winter Gem Holly, was one of the first trees Jenn added to her garden after discovering the art of bonsai. It began life as a humble one-gallon garden center shrub, labeled a “sun-loving” landscape plant.
What caught her eye wasn’t the tag—but the exposed roots and its jaunty, off-center angle.
As Jenn’s understanding of bonsai deepened, so did her appreciation for this species. She’s learned that Japanese Holly prefers the gentle rhythm of clip-and-grow, rather than aggressive wiring. Branches don’t like to be forced—they respond best to patient shaping and subtle encouragement.
Now trained since 2021, this small but confident shohin represents the start of a bonsai journey—rooted in curiosity and grown through care.
